Kampong Lorong Buangkok, the last remaining village in Singapore, faces an uncertain future, amid calls for it to be demolished.

According to 83-year-old resident Awe Ludin, only 25 families remain in the kampong, or village, which has one small mosque and a small Buddhist temple.

The village, located in an area of about 12,000 square meters hidden between high-rises and apartment towers, is about an hour by bus from the city-state's famous Orchard Road shopping district.

While Lee Kuan Yew, the founding father of Singapore, transformed the city-state into one of the most developed countries in Southeast Asia over the past three decades, the village somehow remains untouched.

The small village retains its architectural heritage, with old houses still having yards, protected only by simple fences, with gates that are left unlocked most of the time.

Families living in the village, which was founded in 1956, wish to preserve it so future generations of Singaporeans will still be able to visit and see how people of different faiths and cultures used to live together in harmony.
