Jakarta. George Huang’s “Weekend in Taipei” became the latest action movie to hit Indonesian cinemas, and the film has a nice touch of romance and humor aside from serving creative and adrenaline-pumping action scenes.

“Weekend in Taipei” stars Luke Evans who plays the American drug enforcement agent John Lawlor. He accidentally reunites with a Taipei-based mercenary driver and old flame Joey (Gwei Lun-mei) when trying to pursue the latter’s druglord husband Kwang (Sung Kang). Things get even more complicated after John learns that he has a son with Joey called Raymond (Wyatt Yang).

The movie starts with Raymond trying to rat out Kwang’s shady fishery business to John, although the kid only wants to protect the marine ecosystem -- unaware that the adoptive father’s deals are related to the drug trade. The young kid also initially does not know that John is his biological dad.

The plot then centers on John-Joey-Raymond being on the run from Kwang. As they escape the drug lord, the trio try to reconnect as a family. While the three have their happy family moment, Kwang also seems unable to get over being stuck in a love triangle.

The action scenes, including the numerous car chases, on the nearly two-hour-long “Weekend in Taipei” are entertaining overall. Aside from strong punches, “Weekend in Taipei” incorporates humor into the fights. A personal favorite is the fighting scene using kitchen utensils at the beginning of the film.

George Huang also decides to make the final battle between John and Kwang take place inside the movie theater with an elderly couple being their only spectators. The movie theater settings also have an extra dramatic effect on the love triangle rivalry.

The love triangle -- although some may find it cringe -- not only spices up the story, but it gives the antagonist Kwang more color. Rolling Stones’ “Paint it, Black” playing in the title sequence also gives “Weekend in Taipei” another nice touch.
