Team ONIC Wins 2019 Esports President's Cup
Jakarta. Team ONIC Esports won the 2019 Esports President's Cup at the Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex in Jakarta on Sunday after beating Louvre.JG in the final.
ONIC Esports took home the grand prize of Rp 400 million ($28,000), while Louvre.JG won Rp 200 million for second place and PSG.RRQ Rp 100 million for finishing third.
Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi said in his welcoming speech that the three winners will continue to train and prepare to compete in this year's Southeast Asian Games, which will be hosted by the Philippines.
The Esports President's Cup is Indonesia's first esports tournament. It was presented with support of the Presidential Staff Office, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Communication and Information Technology and the Creative Economy Agency (Bekraf).
"The government continues to develop and expand internet infrastructure outside Java, so we hope tournaments like this will not only be hosted in big cities, but also in other areas," Communications Minister Rudiantara said.
"For Bekraf, we hope the gaming industry in Indonesia continues to grow like other sports. We're also supporting local game developers so they can one day earn their place in the international scene," Bekraf head Triawan Munaf said.
Giring Ganesha, head of the Esports President's Cup 2019 steering committee, thanked Bekraf, the communications ministry, sports ministry and Presidential Staff Office for their support.
"Today was proof that gamers and esports fans can get together and support their favorite teams, especially ONIC, which has made gaming history as the first winner of the Esports President's Cup. The enthusiasm of the crowd that came here to Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex is proof that the esports industry will only get bigger," Giring said.
