Singapore's Performing Arts Festival to Light Up Stage in May
Jakarta. The Singapore International Festival of Arts, or SIFA, promises to bring a diverse lineup of artists for its 43rd edition in May next year.
Festival director Gaurav Kripalani will return for his third and final year to helm the event, which will feature local and international theater companies, the organizers said.
Kripalani said one of the highlights of SIFA will be the Asian debut of the internationally acclaimed dance-theatre production "Revisor."
Scheduled to open the festival, "Revisor" reunites artistic director Crystal Pite with playwright Jonathon Young following the success of their previous collaboration, "Bertroffenheit."
"Revisor" begins with a quirky retelling of a mediocre clerk who gets mistaken for a lofty government inspector by the residents of a corrupt little town, a tragicomic blunder that leads to the self-preserving community's downfall.
In another play, "The Year of No Return," Singaporean theater company The Necessary Stage works with actors and artists from Japan, Malaysia and the Philippines to tackle the alarming issue of climate change on stage.
Meanwhile, ningyo buri – where actors play as if they are puppets – will be the highlight of "Oiwa: the Ghost of Yotsuya," a play featuring Singaporean and Japanese actors.
Next is the multilingual "Three Sisters" by the award-winning ensemble cast from Singapore's Nine Years Theatre and America's SITI Company. The audience will follow the story of the titular sisters who struggle to return to the cosmopolitan city where they grew up.
The festival will also mark the conclusion of Toy Factory's trilogy, "A Dream Under the Southern Bough: Existence," which exposes the disparities between one's dream and reality.
SIFA 2020 will be held on May 15-31 next year, organized by Arts House Limited and commissioned by Singapore's National Arts Council.
