“Oddity” Review: A Horror Drama without Excessive Jump Scares
Jakarta. Many horror fans consider Damian McCarthy’s “Oddity” as one of the scariest horror movies so far this year. After releasing the indie horror “Caveat” in 2020, McCarthy is back with “Oddity” that sends chills down your spine without having to rely on excessive jump scares.
The 99-minute horror follows the murder of Dani Odello-Timmis (Carolyn Bracken), the wife of the psychiatrist Ted Timmis (Gwilym Lee). Olin Boole (Tadhg Murphy) is convicted of the crime. A year later, Dani’s twin sister Darcy Odello (Carolyn Bracken) -- a blind clairvoyant that can see the past by touching an object -- gets her hand on Olin Boole’s eyeball as she tries to find out what happened to her twin.
Darcy later visits Ted who now lives with his new girlfriend Yana (Caroline Menton). Darcy also brings a life-sized wooden mannequin. As Ted leaves Yana and Darcy for work, strange things begin to occur. The horror continues to escalate as Darcy finds out what actually happened to her twin.
The story itself might not be something new for horror, but “Oddity” still makes the audience shudder with horror. The cinematography in “Oddity” really sets the mood through its visuals.
Jump scares have become an integral part in horror movies, but “Oddity” does not need to use too much of this scaring technique to build suspense. The movie also places the jump scares at the right moments.
In the acting department, Carolyn Bracken did a good job portraying two characters: Darcy and Dani.
“Oddity” also touches on a number of powerful themes, including sisterhood that is unbreakable by death. “Oddity”, which is now playing in Indonesian cinemas, can be an option for those looking for a different kind of horror.
