Jakarta. Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC) has reached more than 20,000 coffee farmers across Lampung, South Sumatra, North Sumatra, and Aceh under its Stronger Coffee Initiative (SCI), marking progress toward its global target of supporting 30,000 farmers and producing 180,000 tons of third-party verified low-carbon coffee.

“We ensure that the right commodities reach the right place, while farmers benefit from crop diversification, improved yields, and competitive products so they can contribute to global demand,” said Rajat Dutt, country head of LDC Indonesia, at the event “Building a Sustainable Future for Indonesian Farmers through Regenerative Agriculture” at the Shangri-La Hotel in Jakarta on Thursday.

The Stronger Coffee Initiative is a collaborative platform that draws on LDC’s global network and supply chain expertise to strengthen coffee-growing communities, improve soil health, and mitigate climate impacts through sustainable agricultural practices. The initiative is built on three pillars: farmer prosperity, low-carbon production, and locally adapted regenerative agriculture.

The program promotes regenerative farming through agroforestry systems, soil restoration, biodiversity enhancement, and reduced carbon inputs, helping farmers stabilize yields while building resilience against climate volatility.

Chintara Diva Tanzil, country program manager of the Stronger Coffee Initiative, said the program aligns farmer support with measurable sustainability outcomes by combining capacity building with climate mitigation goals.

“Under LDC’s Stronger Coffee Initiative flagship farmer partnership program, the global target is to support 30,000 farmers, a goal that is currently in progress. In Indonesia, the specific program discussed today aims to reach 6,000 farmers by the end of 2026,” Diva said.

Globally, the initiative aims to implement regenerative practices across 100,000 hectares of coffee farmland.

“We aim to remove 180,000 metric tons of carbon emissions through low-carbon coffee production, alongside restoring 100,000 hectares of farmland as part of our regenerative agriculture strategy,” Diva added.

In Indonesia, SCI integrates gender-inclusive Farmer Field Schools and youth-led Farmer Assistance and Support Teams (FAST), providing structured on-farm mentoring and technical guidance that enable farmers to directly apply training outcomes in their fields.

“We train young people and women, equip them with machinery, and deploy them to support farmers in our supply chain who are classified as high risk. These are typically large farms with low productivity and higher environmental exposure. Our FAST teams provide on-site demonstrations and technical services, including proper coffee pruning techniques to improve yields,” Diva said.

Through regenerative coffee demonstration plots and science-based training programs, LDC supports smallholders with practical solutions such as agroforestry integration, biochar application, reduced chemical use, and parametric climate insurance, accelerating the transition toward more resilient and low-carbon coffee systems.
