Indonesia’s ‘Descendants of the Sun’ Adaptation Set for 2027 Release
Jakarta. An Indonesian film adaptation of the hit South Korean drama Descendants of the Sun is scheduled to hit cinemas in Indonesia in 2027, with acclaimed director Hanung Bramantyo at the helm.
The film is based on the 2016 Korean television series of the same name, which starred Song Joong-ki, Song Hye-kyo, Jin Goo, and Kim Ji-won and became a major international hit.
The Indonesian adaptation will feature leading actors Reza Rahadian and Dian Sastrowardoyo in the main roles. The two will portray characters from different professional backgrounds and with contrasting ideals who become involved in a romantic relationship.
The project is being developed through a collaboration involving production companies from Indonesia, South Korea, and Malaysia.
Hanung, a two-time Best Director winner at Indonesia’s Film Festival (FFI) is adapting the original story for Indonesian audiences while retaining its central themes of romance and duty.
For Dian, the film marks the first time she and Reza have been paired as romantic leads, despite having known and worked alongside each other for years as established figures in Indonesia’s film industry.
Dian said she was excited about the opportunity and described the collaboration with Reza as a new experience in her career.
“It is only through this project that Reza and I have truly been brought together as co-actors and as love interests,” Dian said, as quoted by state news agency Antara on Tuesday.
Reza, meanwhile, welcomed the opportunity to work again with Hanung. The two previously collaborated on the 2009 film Perempuan Berkalung Sorban.
Reza described Hanung as being like an older brother, noting that they had worked together for many years, including on music videos, and have continued to collaborate regularly.
“Working with Hanung is not simply a reunion because we still work together almost every year,” Reza said.
The original Descendants of the Sun followed the relationship between a military officer and a doctor as they navigated romance, professional duty, and humanitarian crises. Its success helped further fuel the global popularity of Korean dramas and their stars.
The Indonesian film will bring the story into a local setting, with further details about its plot, production schedule, and supporting cast expected to be announced ahead of its planned 2027 theatrical release.
