Coldplay Show Must Go On: Tourism Minister
Badung, Bali. Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno said British rock band Coldplay will perform in Indonesia on November 15 as scheduled despite opposition from some elements of the community.
One notable voice came from Novel Bamukmin, who urged the cancellation of the show “because Coldplay supports the LGBT community”.
Novel is the secretary-general of a loose organization of former participants of the 212 Movement, named after the Dec. 2, 2016 rally involving a large number of Muslims who sought to topple then Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or Ahok.
But Sandiaga said the government is making sure that the concert will go on without delays.
"On behalf of the government, I can confirm that Indonesia will become the venue of many international concerts to come and thankfully Indonesia has been known as a popular spot [for concerts] because it becomes one of only four Asian nations the Coldplay concert will take place," Sandiaga said.
"As a host, we should be well-prepared for the concert and the public must support this because the concert will create many business opportunities.”
Sandiaga said he is currently fighting for Coldplay tickets for himself and family members but must wait behind a line of half a million buyers.
“This is a war,” he wrote jokingly on Instagram. “I wanted to buy tickets for my family via ColdplayJakarta.com but was informed that the waiting room is full.”
Knowing that the concert capacity is only 80,000, Sandiaga suggested that Coldplay extend the Jakarta concert for one more day.
