Celebrity and Politician Marissa Haque Passes Away at 61
Jakarta. Marissa Haque, a renowned actress and politician, passed away on Wednesday, at approximately 2 a.m. at Premier Bintaro Hospital in South Jakarta. She was 61 years old. Before her passing, Marissa reportedly lost consciousness at her home.
Her sister, Soraya Haque, confirmed the news, saying that Marissa, the wife of rock musician Ikang Fawzi, died suddenly without displaying any prior symptoms of illness.
"She showed no signs of sickness and didn’t complain about any discomfort before her passing," Soraya shared at the family residence in Bintaro, South Tangerang.
Marissa collapsed unexpectedly at her home, prompting her family to rush her to the hospital. "They met upstairs, and according to what we were told, my sister was no longer moving," Soraya explained.
Her sudden passing has deeply affected her family, especially her husband and their two daughters, Isabella Muliawati Fawzi (Bella) and Marsha Chikita Fawzi (Chiki).
Born on Oct. 15, 1962, in Balikpapan, Marissa Haque was the eldest child of Allen Haque and Nike Suharyah. She hailed from a diverse heritage, with Dutch, French, Pakistani, and Madurese roots. Her father had Dutch, French, and Pakistani ancestry, while her mother was of Madurese descent from East Java.
Marissa’s career began in the entertainment industry, where she rose to fame as an actress in the 1980s. She made her film debut in Kembang Semusim in 1981, which garnered public attention. Other notable films in her career include Tinggal Landas Buat Kekasih (1984) and Biarkan Bulan Itu (1987). Her success in showbiz later led her to venture into politics.
After completing her secondary education, Marissa pursued a degree in civil law at Trisakti University. She furthered her education by earning two master's degrees: one in linguistics for deaf children from Unika Atmajaya and another in public administration from Gadjah Mada University. Additionally, she completed her doctoral studies in natural resource and environmental management at Bogor Agricultural University.
Marissa’s political journey began in 2004 when she joined the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and was elected to the House of Representatives, representing West Java. In 2006, she ran for the position of Deputy Governor of Banten with the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), though she was not elected. In 2007, Marissa joined the United Development Party (PPP) and later moved to the National Mandate Party (PAN) in 2012.
