Touches 9,000 in Early Trade, JCI Extends Record Rally
Jakarta. Indonesia’s benchmark stock index briefly crossed the 9,000 threshold mark at Monday’s open, extending its record run as early buying pushed the Jakarta Composite Index (JCI) briefly through the psychological level.
JCI opened 0.61% higher, up 55 points at 8,991, after touching 9,000 in the first minutes of trading. The index moved within a tight range of 8,957–9,000.
Market activity was brisk, with volume reaching 7 billion shares and turnover at Rp 4.53 trillion ($269.07 million). Total transactions exceeded 610,000. Gainers slightly outnumbered losers, with 282 stocks advancing, 288 declining, and 142 unchanged.
Phintraco Sekuritas said investors will continue to monitor geopolitical developments and corporate actions, while also turning their attention to key domestic data releases. Retail sales figures are due later today and are expected to provide fresh cues on consumer demand.
Global sentiment remained supportive after Wall Street closed at fresh records on Friday, despite a mixed US labor market report that tempered expectations for an imminent interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve without ruling it out.
The S&P 500 rose 0.6% to a new all-time high, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 237 points, or 0.5%, also setting a record. The Nasdaq composite led gains, climbing 0.8%. In absolute terms, the S&P 500 added 44 points to 6,966, the Dow advanced to 49,504, and the Nasdaq jumped 191 points to 23,671.
US data showed employers hired fewer workers in December than expected, even as the unemployment rate improved more than forecast. The figures reinforced the view of a “low-hire, low-fire” labor market that could help the economy avoid a recession. Following the release, traders pared back bets on a rate cut at the Fed’s next meeting later this month, with the implied probability falling to 5% from 11%, according to CME Group data.
Across Asia on Monday morning, Japan’s Nikkei opened lower, sliding 0.91% to 51,367. South Korea’s Kospi jumped 1.1% to 4,639, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose 0.54% to 26,376. China’s Shanghai Composite edged up 0.33% to 4,134.
