Shell Restores Super Gasoline Sales in Indonesia Amid Ongoing Fuel Shortages
Jakarta. Shell Indonesia said it has resumed sales of its Shell Super gasoline at stations nationwide after weeks of shortages that hit private fuel retailers across the country.
The company confirmed on Monday that Shell Super has been available again since Sept. 7. Other gasoline products, including Shell V-Power and Shell V-Power Nitro+, remain unavailable, while Shell V-Power Diesel has returned to the market.
“Shell Super is now available at Shell stations as of the morning of Sept. 7,” the company said in a statement on its official website.
The disruption began in mid-August, when Shell and rival BP-AKR halted sales of several non-subsidized fuel products. Officials at the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry blamed the shortages on a shift in consumer behavior, with drivers restricted from buying subsidized Pertalite gasoline turning instead to private retailers. Buyers of subsidized fuel are now required to register with state-owned Pertamina’s MyPertamina platform and obtain a QR code, while certain vehicles are no longer eligible.
Deputy Energy Minister Yuliot Tanjung said the government has urged private operators to secure supplies from Pertamina’s domestic refineries rather than relying on imports. In turn, Pertamina has been asked to ensure product quality and specifications meet private distributors’ needs.
The latest development comes as Shell is winding down its presence in Indonesia’s fuel retail market. On May 23, parent company Shell plc agreed to sell about 200 gas stations, including 160 company-owned outlets, to a joint venture between Hong Kong-based Citadel Pacific Limited and Indonesia’s Sefas Group. The transaction is expected to close next year.
Shell has said the divestment will not affect its lubricant operations in Indonesia. The company operates a 300-million-liter-per-year blending plant, is building a grease production facility in Marunda, and runs a fuel terminal in Gresik. The Shell brand will remain in Indonesia under licensing agreements, with fuel supplies continuing through local partners.
