Gov’t Tries to Find Middle Ground on Green Electricity Prices
Jakarta. The government tries to find middle ground on electricity prices, particularly those generated from renewables, according to a senior official.
Work is underway for Indonesia to increase renewables in its energy mix in a bid to slash carbon emissions. M Pradana Indraputra, a special staff at the Energy Ministry, said that the government must make sure that the green electricity remains affordable for the people, but without putting additional pressure on investors.
“We need to find a middle ground. The government remains consistent in our wish to provide sufficient and affordable energy while also shifting to renewables,” Pradana said in a dialogue held as part of the 2025 Energy and Mineral Festival in Jakarta.
If electricity prices are too low, businesses will struggle to cover unchanged production costs. This might cause investors to hesitate to invest in Indonesia’s renewable energy sector.
Despite the challenges, Pradana said that the government would remain committed to the energy transition plan as laid out in the so-called electricity supply business plan (RUPTL). The document states that 70 percent of newly installed capacity over the next decade should come from renewables.
“The Energy Ministry has approved this 10-year RUPTL plan. This shows how we are consistent in our wish to promote clean energy towards a sustainable, greener Indonesia,” Pradana said.
Pradana admitted that Indonesia was still using coal to generate its power.
“However, the increase of coal use is still insignificant compared to the growth ratio of renewable energy use,” Pradana said.
