Potential Grab–GoTo Merger Draws Caution from Antitrust Watchdog Over Monopoly Risks
Jakarta. The Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU) has cautioned that the proposed merger between GoTo Gojek Tokopedia and Grab must not result in monopolistic practices in the ride-hailing sector.
KPPU Deputy Chair Aru Armando said the commission could not officially comment on the potential transaction because it remains speculative and has not yet been formally filed. However, he emphasized that safeguarding fair competition is essential.
“KPPU cannot comment on the issue because it may create bias, as the deal is still a plan and may not even happen. But I have been asked for my view,” Aru told Antara on Wednesday. “Our concern is that no future transaction should lead to monopoly or unfair business competition.”
Public speculation suggests that the merger discussions are being encouraged by the Indonesian government through its sovereign wealth fund Danantara, as President Prabowo Subianto’s administration seeks greater stability in the online-transport sector -- a sector that employs millions and is often regarded as an “economic hero” during periods of crisis.
