Gov’t Data Center to Recover from Cyberattack Effects This Month
Jakarta. Chief Security Minister Hadi Tjahjanto recently said that the national data center would recover from the cyberattack effects later this month.
All eyes are now on the government after the so-called Brain Cipher ransomware attacked the so-called Temporary National Data Center, crippling many public services. The hackers have demanded ransom money worth $8 million (Rp 131.15 million) in exchange for returning the data. According to Hadi, the government is now trying to return the data center back to normal.
“Mr. President [Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo] has instructed us to make sure that this data center be back to normal this July,” Hadi told reporters in Jakarta on Monday.
Hadi also blamed the recent ransomware on “detected password”. In response, the National Cyber and Encryption Agency (BSSN) will keep an eye on the password use within the data center. BSSN will also monitor the data and the data center employee activities. He added: “We will link the data center under BSSN’s command, which is located in Ragunan.”
The attack occurred on June 20. BSSN and the Communications Ministry revealed on June 24 that 211 institutions got affected by the cyberattack. The number grew to 282 institutions as of June 25. As of the following day, around 44 institutions were ready to recover the data, while the others were still in process. Five of all affected institutions were ready to serve the public again following data migration.
Communications Minister Budi Arie Setiadi not long ago claimed that no data got leaked due to the cyberattack.
