Ganjar and Prabowo Debate Over Free Meals vs. Free Internet
Jakarta. Presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto emphasizes the importance of providing free internet for all Indonesians. Still, he makes it clear that his top priority is the free lunch program he suggests.
This response comes in light of the statement by his rival, Ganjar Pranowo, who claimed that Prabowo once stated that free internet is not important. Prabowo clarifies that Ganjar might have misunderstood his previous remarks. Free internet is one of Ganjar's flagship programs.
"Perhaps you did not fully hear my statement. What I meant to convey was a comparison between the importance of free internet and free meals for those facing difficulties, particularly the poor and those in the lower-income bracket. I prioritize free meals for their well-being." Prabowo said during the fifth and final presidential debate at JCC, Jakarta, on Sunday.
"While I agree with free internet, it should not be prioritized over free meals. Nutrition is crucial for our people; they must eat, children must eat, and the poor must eat," the defense minister added.
He said the free internet program is necessary to address digital inequality. Consequently, Prabowo promises to bring free internet to all Indonesian citizens if elected as president.
"I reiterate. In the context of free internet, when compared to free meals, which takes precedence? I mean that free meals are prioritized. It does not mean that free internet is not important," Prabowo explained.
"If I become president, I will bring free internet to all villages in Indonesia. However, free meals for Indonesian children and pregnant women are strategic and essential to me," he concluded.
The fifth and final debate in the 2024 presidential election focuses on social welfare, culture, education, information technology, health, employment, human resources, and inclusion issues.
