Trade-Ins of ICE and HEVs Remain Popular Despite EV Entry
Jakarta. Car trade-in platform OLXmobbi reported Tuesday that conventional and hybrid vehicles remain popular despite the rising marketing campaigns by their electric counterparts.
The 2025 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) has shown some interesting dynamics. Various automakers are currently ramping up their marketing of electric vehicles (EVs). However, OLXmobbi reported the internal combustion engine (ICE) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) still held strong appeal, especially in terms of resale value.
OLXmobbi, the official trade-in partner of 2025 GIIAS, reported a 53 percent year-on-year (yoy) increase in the number of customers selling their old cars for new ones at the event. The number of car sellers on the OLXmobbi platform also rose 47 percent (yoy). This data reflects how Indonesians are increasingly keen on buying used cars, thus indicating a rising vehicle turnover in the national auto market.
OLXmobbi reported that the average cars bought at the 2025 GIIAS cost around Rp 150 million ($8,985). The highest-priced car was in the HEV category, topping Rp 300 million in value. The average BEV or battery-powered car only sells at around Rp 115 million. There was also a similar trend regarding the cars most frequently sold by 2025 GIIAS visitors. Toyota Kijang Innova and Avanza were the most popular ones in the ICE category, while it was the Toyota Yaris Cross that dominated the sales of HEVs. The Wuling Air EV was the most popular BEV model sold by customers. From a model standpoint, OLXmobbi revealed that MPVs (multi-purpose vehicles), SUVs (sport utility vehicles), and hatchbacks remained the most frequently bought cars.
"At 2025 GIIAS, the cars sold and traded in through OLXmobbi are generally in very good condition. We implemented specific standards, including ensuring that the cars were flood-free, so that consumers always receive quality used cars,” OLXmobbi director Agung Iskandar was quoted as saying in a press statement.
“As we book much better results this year, we hope to continue contributing to the overall automotive business,” Agung said.
OLXmobbi attributed ICE and HEV’s popularity to the depreciation rate, which stands at between 10 and 15 percent a year. The average depreciation rate for BEVs reaches between 35 and 60 percent a year. This shows that although BEVs are often marketed as the future of automotive technology, it’s still hard for people to resell such cars, especially since newer and affordable models continue to enter the market. Financing companies are also quite hesitant about financing used BEVs.
