Jakarta. Vice presidential candidate Gibran Rakabuming talked of green job creation in Sunday’s climate-focused debate.

According to Gibran, Indonesia will be able to generate green jobs for its youth if it continues to process its natural resources at home rather than exporting them unprocessed. This strategy -- coupled with sustainable development, green transition, creative economy, and MSMEs -- is expected to create many jobs if everything goes well.

“If God is willing, we will be able to create 19 million jobs for Indonesian youth and women,” Gibran said.

“About 5 million of those jobs are green jobs. Green jobs are job opportunities in the field of environmental sustainability. This is the current and future trend,” Gibran said.

The International Labor Organization (ILO) defines green jobs as decent jobs that contribute to preserving or restoring the environment.

The next debate, which is slated for Feb. 4, will focus on social welfare, education, information technology, health, labor, human capital, and inclusion. All three presidential candidates are expected to face off against one another in the next debate.
