Biodiversity Studies Key to Sustainable Mining, Expert Says
Luwu. As global attention to sustainable natural resource management continues to grow, the use of scientific data in environmental decision-making has become an increasingly important benchmark in international sustainability standards.
Environmental management is no longer viewed merely as a matter of regulatory compliance, but as part of responsible, science-based governance.
That was the view expressed by Dr. Nyoto Santoso, a forest conservation and ecotourism expert from IPB University, after leading a biodiversity assessment conducted by PT Masmindo Dwi Area (MDA) in collaboration with the Luwu Regency Environmental Agency (DLH). The assessment covered areas surrounding MDA's Contract of Work, with a particular focus on Latimojong District.
The study was carried out from June 23 to July 8, 2026, as a follow-up to an earlier biodiversity assessment completed in October 2025.
Over the course of more than two weeks, the research team examined various components of the ecosystem, including the diversity of flora and fauna, habitat characteristics, and the area's ecological condition. The findings will serve as the basis for future environmental management recommendations.
The assessment was conducted not only to evaluate biodiversity around MDA's mining concession as part of Indonesia's regulatory requirements. According to the company, the continued implementation of biodiversity studies in collaboration with independent experts and the Luwu Environmental Agency also reflects MDA's efforts to integrate global sustainability principles into its environmental management practices.
This approach places science-based decision-making at the core of environmental management, a practice that is increasingly recognized as an international standard for responsible mining and environmental stewardship.
"In many countries, the quality of environmental management is no longer measured solely by regulatory compliance," Dr. Nyoto said. "What is increasingly important is the extent to which environmental decisions are based on scientific evidence. Biodiversity assessments are a key tool because they provide a comprehensive understanding of ecosystem characteristics before management decisions are made."
According to Dr. Nyoto, a science-based approach leads to better-informed decisions while strengthening the balance between natural resource utilization and environmental conservation.
He also emphasized the importance of collaboration between MDA, the Luwu Environmental Agency, and academic institutions in ensuring the assessment process remains objective and produces recommendations that are relevant to local environmental conditions.
"When each stakeholder fulfills its role effectively, the results of the assessment carry greater value, both academically and in terms of practical implementation," he said.
