Worship Hall Collapse Kills 3, Injures More Than 80 Women in Indonesia
Bogor. At least three people were killed and 84 others injured when a building hosting a religious gathering collapsed in Bogor, Indonesia, on Sunday morning.
The accident occurred at the Majelis Taklim Asobiyah building in Sukamakmur village, Ciomas subdistrict, where hundreds of female worshippers had gathered for a Maulid Nabi (Prophet Muhammad’s birthday) prayer event.
According to the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), the two-story structure gave way at around 8:30 a.m. as the crowd pressed onto the terrace and main hall. Most of the attendees were women.
Officials said the building’s fragile structure was unable to withstand the weight of more than 150 participants, many of whom spilled out onto the terrace. The floor eventually gave way, causing part of the building to collapse.
“Three people died and 84 others were injured, ranging from minor to serious conditions. All victims are now receiving treatment at nearby hospitals,” said Bogor Regent Rudy Susmanto, who visited the site. He added that the local government would cover all medical expenses for the victims.
Doctors reported that most of the injured suffered head trauma, internal bleeding, and broken bones after being crushed or falling when the floor collapsed.
“We are treating about 30 patients here, with injuries ranging from minor to severe,” said Ilham Chaidir, director of Bogor General Hospital.
Authorities identified the three women who died as Irni RS, from Sukamakmur village, and Ulan and Nurhayati, both from Sukaluyu village.
Emergency teams secured the site to prevent further accidents, while local officials pledged to investigate the safety of the building and review structural standards for community religious facilities.
Maulid Nabi gatherings are a major annual tradition in Indonesia, drawing large crowds to prayer halls and mosques across the country.
