Two Indonesians Killed in Hong Kong High-Rise Fire
Jakarta. The fatal Hong Kong high-rise fire has killed at least two Indonesians, the government announced Thursday.
A blaze had broken out in Hong Kong’s high-rise complex on Wednesday local time. It quickly became the city’s worst fire in six decades as the latest death toll has recently climbed to 55 people. The Indonesian Consulate General in Hong Kong had confirmed with local authorities that the fire had left at least two Indonesians dead.
“Two others suffer injuries. All [four] victims are Indonesian migrant domestic workers,” the Foreign Ministry said.
They did not say the severity of the wounds.
The consulate general has spoken with the local authorities and employment agencies about the repatriation process and rights. However, Indonesia did not say when the bodies would land in Jakarta. They have also contacted the victims’ families.
The fire had started at a housing estate in Hong Kong’s Tai Po district at around 2.51 p.m. local time on Wednesday. A flammable bamboo scaffolding outside the building had initially caught fire. It quickly turned into an inferno as it spread up the structure, into the building, and eventually the nearby towers. About 280 people are still missing. As many as 76 people are in the hospital. A full-scale rescue work is still ongoing.
Hong Kong amassed 99,773 Indonesian migrant workers throughout 2024, official statistics showed.
