Tropical Cyclone Seeds Observed: BMKG Cautions Public on Heavy Rain and Rough Seas
Jakarta. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) detected two out of three tropical cyclone seeds observed at several points on Monday.
These cyclone seeds are expected to potentially influence rainfall and high ocean waves in several regions of Indonesia within the next 24 hours.
The three atmospheric disturbances include Tropical Cyclone Seed RAGAZA, Tropical Cyclone Seed 92W, and Tropical Cyclone Seed 98B. Their presence was detected by BMKG’s weather satellite, with 98B currently identified in the Bay of Bengal, northeast of the Indian Ocean.
BMKG’s Director of Public Meteorology, Andri Ramadhani, explained that Tropical Cyclone RAGAZA was observed over the Philippine Sea, east of Luzon Island, with maximum wind speeds reaching 100 knots or 185 kilometers per hour and a minimum air pressure of 925 hPa.
“Within the next 24 hours, Tropical Cyclone RAGAZA is expected to strengthen into Category 5, moving westward away from Indonesian territory,” he said on Monday.
Andri noted that the indirect impact of RAGAZA could potentially trigger moderate to heavy rainfall in North Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, and West Kalimantan.
Ocean waves of 1.25–2.5 meters in height are also likely to occur in the waters around the Sangihe-Talaud Islands.
Meanwhile, Tropical Cyclone Seed 92W was detected in the western Pacific Ocean, northeast of Papua, with maximum wind speeds of 20 knots and a minimum pressure of 1,013 hPa.
This cyclone seed has a low potential to develop into a tropical cyclone within the next 24–72 hours and is not expected to cause extreme weather in Indonesia.
As for Tropical Cyclone Seed 98B, observed in the Bay of Bengal northeast of the Indian Ocean, it also has a low chance of developing into a tropical cyclone within the next 24–72 hours. This cyclone seed is moving with maximum wind speeds of 15 knots and a minimum pressure of 1,006 hPa.
Seed 98B also has the potential to trigger ocean waves of similar height in the western Indian Ocean off Aceh and the northern part of the Malacca Strait.
BMKG has urged the public -- especially fishermen, sea transport users, and operators -- to pay close attention to weather forecasts and high wave warnings to ensure safe activities.
Tropical cyclone seeds are the initial stage in the formation of tropical cyclones -- large storms that can cause strong winds, heavy rainfall, and high waves at sea. These seeds usually form in warm ocean areas, such as around Indonesia. When conditions are favorable, they may develop into stronger storms.
