Tangerang. The Tangerang Regency Government has prepared land in Mauk District for the construction of a Rp 3 trillion ($181 million) waste-to-energy facility, a national strategic project scheduled to begin in 2026, officials said Sunday.

Head of the Regency’s Environment and Sanitation Office Ujat Sudrajat said the chosen site -- the Jatiwaringin landfill -- meets all technical requirements, including land area, waste volume capacity, and supporting infrastructure.

“We must meet several conditions, such as a minimum of five hectares of land, road access, and daily waste accumulation above 1,000 tons,” Ujat said. “While the minimum is five hectares, we are able to provide up to seven.”

Heavy machinery has been deployed to clear the area as part of early groundwork. The site is expected to be ready for final inspection by the central government in November 2025.

The project will be financed by Danantara, Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund, and is expected to take two years to complete once construction begins.

According to Ujat, the facility will be capable of processing up to 3,000 tons of waste per day, serving not only Tangerang Regency but also Tangerang City and South Tangerang City.

“This is an inter-regional project that involves both technical and administrative collaboration across the Greater Tangerang area,” he added.

The regency government welcomed the central government’s decision to prioritize the project, particularly after Tangerang Regency was declared a waste emergency zone on October 13 due to overcapacity at existing landfill sites.

Ujat said this initiative offers a long-term solution for the regency's growing waste problem.
