Sumatra Floods Updates: 867 Dead, 521 Missing as Search Expands
Jakarta. Indonesia’s disaster agency said Friday that at least 867 people have been confirmed dead and 521 remain missing after flash floods and landslides devastated three provinces on the island of Sumatra, with search and rescue operations still underway.
The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said the death toll is expected to climb as rescue teams expand operations and verify data from remote areas. More than 4,200 residents have been injured, ranging from minor to critical wounds.
According to data from provincial emergency command centers, Aceh accounts for the largest number of evacuees, followed by North Sumatra and West Sumatra. North Sumatra has 51,433 displaced residents, Aceh 775,346, and West Sumatra 22,354, bringing the total number of evacuees across the three provinces to 849,133 people.
Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra have been the hardest hit since the disaster struck earlier this week, following days of torrential rain.
Aceh has recorded 345 deaths and 174 missing, while North Sumatra reported 312 fatalities and 133 missing. In West Sumatra, authorities counted 210 dead and 214 unaccounted for.
Agam district in West Sumatra suffered the highest number of fatalities, with 156 residents killed, followed by 124 deaths in Aceh Utara and 89 in Central Tapanuli.
BNPB said 51 districts and municipalities have been affected by the disaster, which triggered widespread infrastructure destruction. Early assessments recorded:
-
121,000 houses damaged
-
1,100 public facilities affected
-
270 health facilities damaged
-
509 schools affected
-
338 houses of worship damaged
-
221 government buildings affected
-
405 bridges sustaining moderate to severe damage
The scale of destruction has hampered rescue operations, with collapsed bridges and blocked roads slowing the delivery of aid and evacuation of survivors.
Joint search-and-rescue teams involving the military, police, Basarnas, and volunteer groups remain deployed across multiple disaster zones. Regional governments have activated emergency response posts to coordinate relief efforts and distribute humanitarian assistance.
BNPB warned that the number of missing and deceased could rise in the coming days as floodwaters recede and previously inaccessible areas become reachable.
