Seven Convicts of Vina and Eki Murder Case Re-Examined by the Police
Bandung. Seven inmates convicted in the 2016 murder case of Vina Dewi Arsita and her boyfriend, Muhammad Rizky "Eki" Rudiana, in Cirebon, are currently undergoing re-examination at the General Crime Investigation Directorate (Ditreskrimum) of the West Java Regional Police.
They have been temporarily transferred from Cirebon Penitentiary to Banceuy Penitentiary and Kebonwaru Detention Center in Bandung.
Since Tuesday, the seven convicts involved in the Vina and Eki murder case have been undergoing examination.
"We are conducting in-depth examination and additional interrogation of the convicts who have been in prison," confirmed West Java Police Public Relations Chief, Jules Abraham Abbast, on Wednesday.
The seven convicts undergoing re-examination are Rivaldi Aditya Wardana, Eko Ramadhani, Hadi Saputra, Jaya, Eka Sandi, Sudirman, and Supriyanto.
The case gained renewed attention after the release of the film "Vina: Sebelum 7 Hari (Vina: Before 7 Days)" on May 8, depicting the incident. The movie has been watched by 5 million viewers since its release.
One of the suspects, previously on the Wanted Persons List (DPO), was arrested in Bandung City, West Java.
Surawan, Director of the General Crime Investigation Directorate at the West Java Regional Police, confirmed the arrest of Pegi Setiawan, 31, in Bandung, West Java, after eight years on the run. Two other fugitives, Andi, 30, and Dani, 28, remain at large.
Vina, a second-year vocational high school student at the time, fell victim to a motorcycle gang in Jalan Raya Talun, Cirebon Regency, West Java. Her body, alongside her boyfriend Eki's, was discovered on a sidewalk. Initially categorized as a vehicle incident, the subsequent investigation uncovered the murders and sexual assault.
Jogie Nainggolan, a lawyer representing five of the eight convicts, questioned the lack of forensic evidence during the investigation, particularly regarding DNA tests.
Saka Tatal, one of eight convicts, recently claimed he was wrongly convicted. He was just 15 when he was arrested and coerced into confessing to the crime. He was punished with an 8-year sentence but was released in 2020, while the others received life imprisonment. "I was at home with family and friends that night, unaware of the crime," Saka, now 23, told BTV.
The Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) has received a request for witness protection regarding the murder case. LPSK Deputy Chairperson Susilaningtyas said that they are currently reviewing the request for protection submitted by a witness.
