Russian Woman Detained in Surabaya for Immigration Violation
Sidoarjo. A Russian woman has been detained by immigration officials in Surabaya, East Java, after failing to provide valid travel documents, an official said on Thursday.
The woman, identified only by her initials DM, 29, was reportedly involved in "unauthorized activities" in the city, according to Muhammad Novrian Jaya, head of the intelligence unit at the Surabaya Immigration Office.
"The suspect was either unable or unwilling to present her passport when requested by immigration officers, which led to her detention," Novrian explained.
DM allegedly organized a "model selection" event without the necessary permits, although further details were not provided.
In addition to her lack of travel documents, DM also gave conflicting information during questioning by the immigration office's "cyber patrol team," which had responded to a public tipoff.
"The cyber patrol is part of our routine efforts to monitor foreign nationals' activities," Novrian added.
DM now faces charges under Indonesia's immigration law, which imposes penalties of up to three months in prison or a fine of up to Rp 25 million ($1,600) for foreign nationals who fail to present valid travel documents.
