Jakarta. Queen Máxima of the Netherlands arrived in Indonesia on Monday for a three-day working visit focused on financial inclusion and financial health, in her capacity as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Advocate (UNSGSA). She landed at Soekarno–Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, where she was welcomed by senior Indonesian officials, including Friderica Widyasari Dewi, Chief Executive for Financial Consumer Protection at the Financial Services Authority (OJK).

Queen Máxima’s visit centers on reviewing Indonesia’s programs on financial literacy, consumer protection, and financial health --a concept that extends beyond basic financial inclusion to long-term financial planning, resilience, and overall well-being.

Friderica said Indonesia’s large and diverse population, combined with its archipelagic geography and uneven internet access, makes financial education a complex challenge. “But we remain committed to it,” she said at the airport. “Her Majesty sees Indonesia as a key country because of its scale and the innovative programs we have implemented.”

According to OJK, Queen Máxima is particularly interested in Indonesia’s national financial literacy and inclusion surveys, as well as community-based education initiatives. “She wants to see firsthand how these programs are carried out and what impact they have on the public,” Friderica said.

Friderica said that Queen Máxima has been encouraging countries to elevate the discussion from financial inclusion to financial health. She cited the Queen’s reflections from other developing countries, including Kenya, where communities prioritize education costs and essential needs as part of financial planning.

“Her Majesty emphasizes the importance of long-term planning and financial resilience as key elements of financial health,” Friderica said.

OJK said the Queen’s focus aligns with Indonesia’s Financial Sector Development and Strengthening Law, which mandates comprehensive efforts to improve financial literacy and consumer protection. Queen Máxima also highlighted global concerns related to scams, fraud, and online gambling, problems Indonesia is currently tackling through the newly established Indonesia Anti-Scam Center and the multi-agency PASTI Task Force.

“She greatly appreciates Indonesia’s efforts, including cooperation with the Finance Ministry, Bank Indonesia, the Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS), and other institutions,” Friderica said.
