Prabowo Urges SOE Land to Support 3 Million Homes Program
Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto has called for faster housing development in Indonesia by prioritizing land owned by state enterprises for affordable housing, as the government pushes forward with its ambitious plan to build millions of homes annually.
Speaking on behalf of the president, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, head of the government’s housing task force, said land owned by state-owned enterprises (SOEs) should be treated as public assets and used primarily to support housing programs for ordinary Indonesians.
“The president has said several times that land owned by state enterprises belongs to the people of Indonesia. It should not be sold at market prices,” Hashim said during the launch of a housing development initiative supporting the government’s housing program at Manggarai Station on Monday.
According to Hashim, the directive aims to ensure that state-owned land is used to support affordable housing projects rather than commercial property developments.
Prabowo’s administration has pledged to build 3million homes each year as part of a nationwide effort to address Indonesia’s housing shortage. The plan includes two million homes in rural and coastal areas and one million units in urban centers.
Hashim said the president’s instruction comes amid concerns that some parties may seek to capitalize on the commercial value of state land.
If land owned by state enterprises were sold at market prices, he warned, the government’s effort to provide affordable homes for low-income households would become more difficult to achieve.
“For the housing program, this land must be prioritized for public housing,” he said, adding that the initiative is part of the government’s broader strategic development agenda.
Beyond providing housing, Hashim said the large-scale construction program could also serve as a major driver of economic growth.
“With this housing program, we can help push economic growth to reach 8% or even higher,” he said.
The housing sector has a significant multiplier effect on the economy because it stimulates demand across a wide range of industries, he added.
“When housing construction expands, many sectors move at the same time —cement, furniture, electrical cables, steel, timber and others,” Hashim said.
However, he cautioned that the housing initiative should not focus solely on meeting numerical targets.
Hashim urged stakeholders involved in the program to ensure construction quality remains high so that the homes built under the program provide safe and decent living conditions for residents.
Indonesia’s housing push is one of the cornerstone policies of Prabowo’s administration, which has set an ambitious target of accelerating infrastructure and social development to support long-term economic growth.
