Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto on Sunday called on the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) to take an active role in safeguarding the nation’s vast natural wealth, warning that Indonesia’s resources continue to be exploited by irresponsible foreign actors.

Speaking at a ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the TNI in Jakarta, Prabowo said Indonesia’s abundant natural resources have long been the target of external interests.

“For hundreds of years, foreign powers have tried to seize and exploit our natural wealth,” Prabowo said. “Even today, much of our wealth is being stolen, smuggled, and taken by irresponsible forces.”

He urged the military to assist law enforcement agencies and both central and regional governments in protecting the country’s natural assets, describing resource protection as integral to Indonesia’s national resilience.

“The Indonesian Armed Forces must be responsive and assist law enforcement, regional authorities, and the central government in defending our natural resources,” he said.

Prabowo stressed that sustainable management of Indonesia’s natural endowment is vital for the nation’s transformation into a modern, advanced economy and for eradicating poverty.

“Our natural wealth must be preserved and managed sustainably. It is one of the key foundations for building a prosperous and modern Indonesia,” he said.

The President also underlined the TNI’s strategic role amid growing global uncertainty, calling the armed forces the “backbone” of Indonesia’s sovereignty and security.

“The TNI is the backbone of our national defense -- the guarantor of our sovereignty. Soldiers must be ready to sacrifice everything for the safety of our nation and people,” Prabowo said.

He further urged military personnel to embrace technological adaptation and scientific advancement, stressing the importance of modernization to meet future defense challenges.

“The TNI must deepen its knowledge, follow technological progress, and never fall behind the times,” he said.

The anniversary celebration at Jakarta’s National Monument (Monas) featured a grand military parade, showcasing modern weaponry and formations involving around 133,000 troops. The event also included aerial demonstrations by F-16, Sukhoi-27, and Hawk-100/200 fighter jets, as well as an in-air refueling display -- highlighting Indonesia’s growing air defense capabilities.
