Jakarta. As development of Indonesia’s future capital continues, nearly 150,000 people are now living in the Nusantara area, according to data released by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS).

BPS, together with the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) and the Nusantara Capital Authority (OIKN), on Thursday officially launched the results of the 2025 Nusantara Capital Population Registration (PPIKN). The survey recorded 147,430 residents, representing 43,293 households, living within the Nusantara area.

The majority of the population, 67.91%, falls within the productive age group, dominated by Generation Z and millennials, indicating the growing presence of young workers in the new capital area.

The Nusantara delineation spans parts of Kutai Kartanegara and Penajam Paser Utara regencies in East Kalimantan. Population distribution remains concentrated in several villages, including Samboja Kuala, Muara Jawa Ulu, Muara Jawa Pesisir, and Telemow, each recording population densities of more than 400 people per square kilometer. These areas are expected to become priorities for basic services and infrastructure provision.

Demographically, the survey showed a gender ratio of 106, indicating a higher number of men than women. The data also identified the oldest resident in the area as a 108-year-old woman.

Mobility data revealed that 41.16% of IKN residents were born outside the region, with the largest inflows coming from East Kalimantan, South Sulawesi, and East Java, reflecting rising migration linked to economic activity and development in the area.

The geotagging-based survey also highlighted persistent challenges in meeting basic living standards. BPS recorded 232 households with dirt floors, 142 households without access to proper sanitation, 530 households relying on rainwater for drinking, and 49 households not yet connected to electricity. The findings are expected to guide more targeted government interventions.

BPS head Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti said the PPIKN 2025 results would serve as a strategic instrument for policymaking and future surveys in Nusantara.

“Beyond providing comprehensive population data, this activity produces key demographic indicators for policy formulation, enables more precise interventions through household geotagging, and serves as a baseline framework for future surveys and strategic analysis in the IKN area,” Amalia said during the dissemination event in Jakarta.

Meanwhile, OIKN head Basuki Hadimuljono said the publication would become the main reference for all stakeholders involved in building the new capital.

Nusantara, officially named Indonesia’s future capital in 2022, is being developed to replace Jakarta as the country’s administrative center. The government has planned a phased relocation of state institutions and civil servants, following the gradual completion of core infrastructure in the coming years.
