Siak, Riau. A plantation worker was mauled to death by a Sumatran tiger when he left his company shelter in Siak Regency, Riau Province, on Tuesday night, police reported on Wednesday.

The victim, identified as Yasonia Zega, 43, was a local employee of the palm plantation company Sunli Acronia Sukses.

His body was discovered shortly after the attack, with his head severed, said Siak District Police Chief Adjunct Commissioner Asep Sujarwadi.

"The victim went out of the shelter to urinate. His co-worker, Ilham Sinaga, heard his scream for help and saw a tiger dragging him away," Asep said.

A group of workers attempted to rescue Yasonia and found his body about 20 meters from the shelter.

"Yasonia’s body was found separated from his head," Asep confirmed.

"We urge residents in the vicinity to remain vigilant of wild animals and avoid outdoor activities at nighttime," the officer added.

Local police are coordinating with the provincial wildlife authority to find solutions to prevent encounters between humans and endangered animals like tigers, Asep said.
