PBSI to Review Paris 2024 Performance After Mixed Results, Bronze Medal Win
Jakarta. Fadil Imran, Secretary General of the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI), has announced a thorough review of their performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics, following a mixed outcome.
The Indonesian team secured a bronze medal in women’s singles through Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, who benefited from Spain's Carolina Marin’s injury in the semifinals. Despite this success, other events saw early exits and a quarterfinal defeat.
Key players such as men’s singles top seeds Jonatan Christie and Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, women’s doubles pair Apriyani Rahayu/Pitha Haningtyas Mentari, and mixed doubles team Rinov Rivaldy/Pitha Haningtyas Mentari were eliminated early in the group stages. Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto was knocked out in the quarterfinals by top seeds Liang Wei Keng/Wang Chang.
Fadil praised the athletes' dedication and effort, noting, "I want to express my appreciation not only to Gregoria but to all the athletes. I am grateful for their time, effort, and dedication. I do not focus solely on winning or losing but on their efforts, which I deeply appreciate."
He specifically commended Gregoria for her performance, stating, “Gregoria truly demonstrated the spirit of a professional athlete. I have extraordinary admiration for her.”
Looking ahead, PBSI plans to engage in discussions and conduct a detailed evaluation of their Olympic performance.
“We will conduct a thorough evaluation once we return home. I will organize a forum to gather input from the media, badminton enthusiasts, and experts on necessary improvements. PBSI will take responsibility for the outcomes in Paris,” Fadil said.
Since badminton became an Olympic event in 1992, Indonesia has won eight gold medals. The only time they did not secure a gold was at the 2012 London Olympics, and they have yet to win a gold medal in any other sport.
