Agam, W. Sumatra. Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Tuesday morning, sending volcanic ash drifting over several areas in Agam Regency and prompting authorities to renew safety warnings for nearby residents.

The eruption occurred at around 10:34 a.m. local time, with ash clouds blown by the wind toward surrounding districts. Residents in Baso subdistrict reported reduced visibility as thick ash blanketed homes and roads.

“The ash reached our area in Baso. It’s quite disruptive to visibility, and we’ve been advised to wear masks,” said Amril, a resident of Sungai Angek, as quoted by state news agency Antara.

Canduang subdistrict, located to the north and northeast of the volcano, was also affected.
“A lot of ash was flying around and covering my parked motorcycle,” said local resident Romi Poslah.

According to the Volcano Monitoring Post (PGA), the eruption was recorded on seismographs with a maximum amplitude of 30.3 millimeters and a duration of around 51 seconds. Officials said the height of the ash column could not be clearly observed due to heavy fog.

“Mount Marapi remains at Level II, or alert. The public is urged to stay at least three kilometers away from the crater,” said PGA officer Ahmad Rifandi.

Ahmad also warned of possible lava flows, particularly for residents living in valleys and along riverbanks whose upstream sources originate from the volcano.

Authorities advised people in affected areas to wear masks during ashfall to reduce the risk of respiratory infections.
