Jakarta. A powerful explosion inside a mosque at the state high school SMA Negeri 72 Jakarta on Friday left dozens of students injured, with most victims suffering hearing loss due to the intensity of the blast, doctors said.

The Jakarta Islamic Hospital received 43 victims following the incident. As of Sunday, 13 students remained hospitalized, including two in the intensive care unit.

Hospital Director Pradono Handojo said on Saturday that two out of three victims treated experienced hearing impairment.

“We believe the victims will recover physically quite soon since they are young -- except for their hearing. About two-thirds of them are suffering from hearing problems,” Pradono said.

He added that beyond physical recovery, psychological counseling would be essential to prevent long-term trauma among the students.

Visiting the hospital on Sunday, Social Affairs Minister Syaifullah Yusuf announced that the government would provide trauma-healing therapy for affected students.

“The trauma healing will take place in hospitals, at school, and at the students’ homes,” Syaifullah said, adding that the effort would involve the National Police, the Social Affairs Ministry, and the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI).

Syaifullah met several victims during his visit. “They have begun to talk about where they were and what they did during the incident,” he said.

He also noted that parents expressed relief seeing their children recover after initial panic sparked by messages in parent chat groups following the blast.

“Many parents rushed to the school immediately after hearing the news. Some couldn’t find their children there and only reunited with them later in hospitals,” Syaifullah said.

A preliminary police investigation suggests the explosion occurred during Friday prayers and was triggered by a student who had been a victim of bullying. The suspected perpetrator, who was also injured, underwent surgery under police guard.

As the suspect is a minor, police have withheld the student’s identity and urged the public not to speculate while the investigation continues. Authorities also clarified that the two guns found at the scene were toy weapons.
