Jakarta. Mining tycoon Harvey Moeis has officially begun serving his 20-year prison sentence after the Supreme Court rejected his final appeal and upheld a graft conviction related to illegal tin mining on state-owned assets.

Harvey was originally sentenced to six and a half years in prison for corruption involving illegal tin trading and mining, but prosecutors appealed the ruling to the Jakarta High Court, which increased his sentence to 20 years.

His subsequent appeal to the Supreme Court was dismissed in early July, making the 20-year sentence final and binding.

According to Attorney General’s Office spokesperson Anang Supriatna, Harvey was transferred to Cibinong Penitentiary in West Java in mid-July to begin serving his sentence.

“The South Jakarta District Prosecutor’s Office has executed the court’s ruling by imprisoning Harvey Moeis,” Anang said in a statement on Thursday.

High-Profile Case and Enormous State Losses
Harvey’s case has drawn nationwide attention due to the estimated Rp 300 trillion ($18 billion) in state losses -- much of it from environmental damage linked to his illegal tin mining operations.

He was also found guilty of money laundering and ordered to repay Rp 420 billion ($25 million) to the state or face an additional 10 years in prison.

During the investigation, prosecutors confiscated extensive assets, including cash equivalent to $1.2 million, 11 properties, and a fleet of luxury cars, such as two Ferraris, a Mercedes-Benz AMG SLS GT, a Porsche, a Rolls-Royce Cullinan, a Mini Cooper, a Lexus RX300, and a Toyota Vellfire. Authorities also seized 88 designer handbags and various items of high-value jewelry.

Public interest in the case intensified due to the lavish lifestyle of Harvey and his wife, actress and model Sandra Dewi.

Sandra had filed a lawsuit against prosecutors, claiming that some of the confiscated assets were her personal property, acquired through her career as a public figure and not connected to her husband’s crimes. However, she later withdrew the lawsuit without providing a clear explanation.
