Yokohama, Japan. Indonesian men's doubles pair Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Daniel Marthin have advanced to the semifinals of the Japan Open 2024 in their first tournament together. The duo secured a convincing 21-14, 21-14 win over China's Chen Bo Yang and Liu Yi in just 34 minutes at Yokohama Arena.

Fikri expressed his enthusiasm for making it to the semifinals, emphasizing the crucial role of communication and focus during the match. "We need to stay focused from the start and be prepared for a tough match," Fikri said, adding that they would study their next opponents, South Korea's Kang Min-hyuk and Seo Seung-jae, to refine their strategy.

On the other hand, Indonesia's top men's doubles team, Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto, faced a disappointing quarterfinal exit. The sixth-seeded pair was defeated by Malaysia's Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin with scores of 16-21, 21-10, 16-21, despite having won eight of their previous nine encounters. This loss marked only the second time Fajar and Rian have been beaten by the Malaysian pair.

Fajar and Rian had reached the quarterfinals after a challenging three-game victory over another Malaysian pair, Choong Hon Jian and Muhammad Haikal. However, their run ended there, leaving Fikri and Daniel as Indonesia's last hope in the semifinals.

Fikri and Daniel now face a tough semifinal match against Kang and Seo, who advanced after a dominant win over Malaysia's Man Wei Chong and Kai Wun Tee.
