Jakarta. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has urged residents to remain vigilant as meteorology agency warns of potentially intense rainfall expected to hit the capital on Tuesday, raising concerns over flooding just days after large parts of the city were inundated.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported an increased risk of extreme rainfall across Jakarta and the wider Greater Jakarta area in the coming days. Authorities say the heaviest rainfall is likely on Tuesday.

To reduce flood risks, the Jakarta provincial government has stepped up preventive measures, including large-scale river dredging and drainage clearance. One of the main focus areas is the Kali Sepak river in Kembangan, West Jakarta, where sediment removal is under way to expand the river’s capacity and improve water flow during periods of high discharge.

Pramono said the administration has deployed 200 excavators across Jakarta’s five administrative cities to support river dredging and drainage works.

“Based on BMKG data, there is a strong possibility of high rainfall tomorrow and in the days ahead. That is why we are continuing excavation and dredging works,” Pramono said on Monday.

“There are 200 excavators across five regions. In one location alone, we deployed three units today. We hope these preventive actions can reduce the impact of flooding in Jakarta,” he added.

In addition to drainage cleanup, the provincial government plans to carry out another weather modification operation on Tuesday. The cloud-seeding program is intended to reduce rainfall intensity by triggering precipitation before rain-bearing clouds reach Jakarta’s most flood-prone areas.

For the medium term, the governor said the city is prioritizing the dredging of three major rivers — the Ciliwung, Krukut and Cakung Lama — which play a crucial role in Jakarta’s flood management system. He said work on the Ciliwung River would soon begin in coordination with the central government and the Public Works Ministry, including the construction of embankments and other flood control structures.

BMKG has issued an early weather warning for the Greater Jakarta area, placing parts of North, Central and West Jakarta on alert for heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by strong winds. South and East Jakarta, the Thousand Islands district, and satellite cities such as Tangerang and Depok are under a lower-level advisory.

Bekasi regency, east of Jakarta, is currently under the highest alert level, with forecasts indicating the potential for extremely heavy rainfall. Residents have been advised to closely monitor official weather updates from BMKG and the Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD).

The BPBD said all floodwaters that inundated parts of Jakarta since Thursday have fully receded as of early Monday. While daily activities have largely returned to normal, authorities remain on high alert due to ongoing weather volatility.

The peak of the flooding occurred on Friday, when inundation spread across all five of Jakarta’s administrative cities, except the Thousand Islands. A total of 143 neighborhood units were affected, with water depths ranging from 30 centimeters to as much as 1.2 meters. The most severe conditions were recorded in Cawang, East Jakarta, where floodwaters reached up to 2.5 meters on Saturday after the Ciliwung River overflowed its banks.

“As of 3 a.m. on Monday, all floodwaters in Jakarta had receded. This was made possible by the coordinated efforts of personnel in the field operating supporting equipment,” said Mohamad Yohan, head of BPBD Jakarta’s disaster data and information center.

Cleanup efforts are now focused on removing mud and debris left behind by the floods to prevent renewed blockages in drainage channels. Authorities continue to monitor rainfall patterns and upstream river conditions as the city braces for another round of potentially extreme weather.
