Jakarta. The General Election Commission (KPU) plans to organize a redo election for Indonesian nationals residing in Kuala Lumpur on March 9-10 in the fallout of mail voting failure affecting more than 300,000 registered voters.

The commission has registered around 491,000 voters in the Malaysian capital but most of them didn’t receive the absentee ballots due to outdated data containing their addresses in the KPU’s database.

KPU Chairman Hasyim Asy'ari said on Tuesday evening that mail voting will be discontinued for the revote.

"The upcoming redo election will employ static polling stations and mobile ballot drop boxes,” Hasyim said at his office in Jakarta.

"The ballot drop boxes will be distributed on Saturday, March 9, and the static polling stations will be opened on Sunday, March 10," he added.

The vote count in Kuala Lumpur is scheduled for March 12, eight days before the overall tally of the presidential and legislative elections is set to be certified.

The Election Oversight Body (Bawaslu) has warned that the planned redo election in Kuala Lumpur may amount to administrative violations because the KPU’s internal ruling sets the deadline for all redo and rescheduled elections on February 24.

The interim tally by the KPU indicates that Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto will win the presidency by 58 percent of the vote.
