Indonesia Transfers 41 ‘High-Risk’ Inmates to Nusakambangan Maximum-Security Prison
Cilacap, Central Java. The Indonesian government has transferred 41 high-risk inmates from several correctional facilities in Jakarta to Nusakambangan Island, home to the country’s most secure prisons, officials said Monday.
The prisoners were placed across five maximum-security facilities on the island, located off the southern coast of Central Java. The relocation was conducted under strict supervision to enhance prison safety and improve inmate management.
“From Jakarta, they were placed in five maximum-security prisons on Nusakambangan,” said Mardi Santoso, head of the Central Java Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections, as quoted by state news agency Antara.
According to Mardi, the transfer was carried out in line with standard operating procedures and followed thorough administrative and physical checks on the inmates.
“All administrative documents have been verified and declared complete,” he said.
The distribution of inmates includes 15 at Karanganyar Prison, 5 at Pasir Putih, 8 at Besi, 12 at Ngaseman, and 1 at Permisan Prison.
Mardi said the transfer aimed to ensure greater security for both the origin prisons and the inmates themselves.
“This relocation also allows for more intensive rehabilitation for high-risk inmates,” he noted.
He added that the rehabilitation programs on Nusakambangan are designed to help inmates recognize their offenses and adhere to correctional principles during their sentences.
“We hope they can reflect on their mistakes and comply with the rules throughout their imprisonment,” he said.
The transfer took place without incident, under heavy guard from corrections officers and police personnel. Mardi confirmed that all stages of the operation proceeded smoothly.
Authorities did not disclose the identities or charges of those moved. Nusakambangan, often referred to as Indonesia’s “Alcatraz,” typically houses high-profile convicts, including terrorists, drug traffickers, and serial murderers.
Located off the coast of Cilacap, Central Java, Nusakambangan has held some of Indonesia’s most notorious inmates, including terror convicts, drug lords, and death row prisoners over the last decades.
The facility also serves as the site of Indonesia’s executions for capital crimes. Amzori, his brother Ali Ghufron, and Imam Samudra -- the trio convicted of the 2002 Bali bombings -- were executed on the island on November 9, 2008.
