Indonesia Says Chile’s President Boric to Visit Jakarta in November
Jakarta. A deputy minister said Monday that Chilean President Gabriel Boric would be making an official visit to Indonesia later this year, as both countries work on upgrading their bilateral trade pact.
Deputy Trade Minister Dyah Roro Esti revealed that President Prabowo Subianto would host Boric for bilateral talks in November. The state visit plans emerged amidst Jakarta’s attempt to include an investment-related chapter in its comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA) with Santiago.
“We welcome the potential visit of President Gabriel Boric to Indonesia in November. … We look forward to it,” Dyah Roro told a bilateral business forum in Jakarta.
Asked whether a visit was on Boric’s official calendar, Chilean Ambassador to Indonesia Mario Artaza admitted that Santiago had expressed interest in the trip. However, the envoy admitted he could not say whether it would really take place in November.
“We are working with the Indonesian authorities in order to identify a date, but no date is confirmed as of now,” Artaza told the Jakarta Globe.
If everything goes according to plan, this would mark Boric’s first-ever official visit to Indonesia.
Indonesia currently has a CEPA-level trade pact with Chile. The agreement already slashes tariffs on goods trade, and has also expanded to include the services sector. Work is now underway to negotiate an investment chapter as Chilean companies seek to put their money in Indonesia. Artaza, however, said that there was no specific time frame for this investment protocol.
Likewise, Dyah Roro did not mention a deadline for the investment chapter negotiations. The Indonesian politician revealed that the pact had caused bilateral trade to skyrocket.
“The average annual bilateral trade [had jumped] from $304 million before the agreement to $446 million in the post-implementation period,” she told the conference.
The Indonesian government also reported a 48 percent year-on-year increase in the issuance of the so-called certificates of origin for the CEPA in 2024. This is a document that verifies that the exported goods come from Indonesia, thus making it eligible for the tariff eliminations provided by the CEPA. Official statistics showed Indonesia-Chile trade totaled $327 million between January and July 2025. Indonesia ran a $211.9 million surplus over the same period.
