Paris. Gregoria Mariska Tunjung expressed mixed emotions on Sunday after securing the bronze medal in women's singles badminton, becoming the first Indonesian athlete to win a medal at the Paris Olympics.

Earlier in the day, she lost to South Korea’s An Se-Young 21-11, 13-21, 16-21 in the semifinal match, dashing Indonesia’s hopes for a gold medal in badminton.

Gregoria has lost to the same opponent in their last eight encounters.

She was scheduled to play former gold medalist and three-time world champion Carolina Marin for the bronze medal on Monday. However, the Spaniard withdrew from the tournament due to an injury sustained during the other semifinal match against Chinese shuttler He Bingjiao. Marin won the first set 21-14 and was leading 10-8 in the second when she suddenly held her knee in pain and retired from the match.

It was later confirmed that Marin withdrew from the upcoming match as well.

"It's a dilemma. It feels wrong to celebrate at the expense of another player's injury -- it's a difficult time for Marin. I don’t know how to react. Of course, I’m grateful for winning a medal, but I’m not sure if I’m happy," Gregoria said.

Since badminton became a medal event in the 1992 Olympics, Indonesia has won eight gold medals. Before Paris, the only time Indonesia failed to win gold in badminton was at the 2012 London Olympics. The country has never won a gold medal in any other sport in the Olympics.
