East Lampung. At 114 years old, Muhamat Amin, a war veteran who once carried the stretcher of the revered General Soedirman (Sudirman) during the Indonesian guerrilla war against Dutch colonial forces, lives in conditions that starkly contrast with the legacy of his service. Residing in a dilapidated wooden house in Brawijaya Village, Sekampung Udik District, East Lampung Regency, his living conditions are far from the dignity he deserves.

Muhamat Amin, affectionately known as Mbah Jumarin by local residents, has spent his twilight years in a house that measures just 10 by 10 meters and is barely protected from the elements. The walls are constructed of wooden planks, and despite his storied past, the home provides little comfort.

Born in 1910, Muhamat Amin joined the fight against Dutch colonial forces at the tender age of 18. His dedication to the cause was evidenced by his role as a stretcher bearer for Gen. Soedirman, a key figure in Indonesia's struggle for independence. Despite his advanced age, he still proudly wears his military uniform adorned with medals and honors that attest to his veteran status.

Soedirman (1916-1950) was a national hero in Indonesia's struggle for independence. Born in Purbalingga, Central Java, he became one of the leading military leaders during the Indonesian National Revolution against Dutch colonial rule. As the commander-in-chief of the Indonesian National Army (TNI), he is renowned for his guerilla tactics during the early stages of the revolution when the Indonesian forces were significantly outnumbered and outgunned.

Despite his military achievements, Soedirman faced significant health challenges, including tuberculosis, which eventually led to his early death in 1950. 

Over the years, Muhamat Amin has fought in numerous battles alongside Gen. Soedirman across various locations. "I fought in Ambulu in Jember (East Java) and my last battle was in Banyuwangi (East Java)," he told Beritasatu.com on Friday.

His commitment to his country has remained steadfast, even as he now seeks a modest wish in his final years—a livable home.

The veteran's meager monthly pension is insufficient to cover the costs of renovating his dilapidated home. Efforts by the local Brawijaya Village to secure government assistance for home repairs have so far been unsuccessful. Despite two proposals for renovation through the housing improvement program, no action has been taken.

"If someone helps with the house renovation, that's great; that's what I'm looking for," Muhamat Amin said.

Muhamat Amin’s hopes for assistance to renovate his wooden house, allowing him to live out his remaining days in a dignified manner. As he approaches the end of his long life, his hope is that a generous benefactor or government support will provide him with a safe and comfortable home, a fitting tribute to his decades of service to his country.
