From Anti-Graft Rhetoric to Arrest: Immanuel Ebenezer Under KPK Scrutiny
Jakarta. Indonesia’s Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has detained 14 people, including Deputy Manpower Minister Immanuel Ebenezer, and seized 22 luxury vehicles in a sweeping late-night operation on Wednesday.
The case centers on alleged extortion involving companies seeking occupational safety and health certification from the Manpower Ministry. As of Thursday evening, the legal status of those detained, including Immanuel, remained unclear.
“He is still undergoing intensive questioning by investigators,” KPK spokesman Budi Prasetyo told reporters in Jakarta. He added that the identities of the other 13 individuals were being withheld pending investigation. A formal press briefing is scheduled for Friday.
The commission also confiscated 15 cars -- including a Nissan GTR, BMW, Mitsubishi Pajero, Toyota Hilux, Jeep, Hyundai Palisade, and Honda CR-V -- along with seven high-end motorcycles such as Ducati and Vespa. Investigators have also seized a large sum of cash, though KPK has yet to disclose details.
Immanuel, who assumed office in October 2024, has attracted scrutiny for the rapid rise in his declared wealth -- from Rp 4.8 billion to Rp 17.6 billion ($1.07 million) in under three years, according to public disclosures. Known for his outspoken style, he frequently joined labor rallies, conducted surprise inspections of factories, and criticized employers in public forums.
Ironically, Immanuel had once urged President Prabowo Subianto to prepare firing squads for corrupt officials, a statement that has resurfaced following his detention.
Despite the unfolding scandal, neighbors in Depok, West Java, described him as a personable and approachable figure. “He often played chess with residents when he had time,” said Yadi, a neighbor. “I am saddened by his situation and never imagined he would be arrested by the KPK.”
