Fire Destroys Several Food Stalls at Fatmawati Street Food Court
Jakarta. A fire broke out at a food court on Fatmawati Raya Street, in front of Cipete Raya MRT Station, Tuku, Cilandak, South Jakarta, early Monday morning.
A fast-food restaurant and several food stalls were completely destroyed by the blaze. Head of the South Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency, Syamsul Huda, said there were no fatalities in the incident.
“The estimated loss reached Rp 1.2 billion (approx. $73,300),” he said on Monday.
Syamsul explained that the affected area covered 1,000 square meters. The fire was suspected to have been caused by electrical problems in the area. One person was injured in the incident.
“One person was injured by broken glass and has been treated by the Indonesian Red Cross,” said Syamsul, as quoted by Antara.
It was reported that the food court fire began on Sunday night and was only extinguished early this morning. Crowds of residents watching the blaze caused traffic congestion.
An online motorcycle taxi driver named Yanto reportedly saw the fire first break out from a freezer in one of the chicken steak food stalls.
Shortly afterward, an explosion occurred, and the flames quickly spread to other stalls and a nearby workshop.
“Mr. Yanto tried to extinguish the growing flames before reporting it to the South Jakarta Fire and Rescue Department, and we immediately dispatched the nearest unit to the scene,” said Syamsul.
A total of 71 South Jakarta Fire and Rescue personnel were deployed to extinguish the blaze, which has been in the cooling phase since 2:50 a.m. local time.
