Family of Deceased Indonesian Diplomat Presses Police for Answers in Mysterious Death
Jakarta. The family of Arya Daru Pangayunan, an Foreign Ministry diplomat found dead under suspicious circumstances in July, is urging national police to provide clarity on the case, saying official explanations so far have left many questions unanswered.
Arya, 38, was discovered on July 8 at a guesthouse in central Jakarta with tape wrapped around his head. Police investigators later ruled out foul play, citing forensic, toxicology, and DNA tests that reportedly found no evidence of involvement by another party.
But the family has rejected those findings. On Monday, their lawyer, Dwi Librianto, visited National Police Headquarters in Jakarta to press for updates, saying the family has received no formal progress report despite sending a written request to National Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo on Aug. 28. A copy of the letter was also submitted to the Jakarta Police chief.
“As of today, there has been no response at all,” Dwi told reporters. “We cannot give a detailed assessment of the investigation because we have never received an official update. But there are clear irregularities in this case.”
One point of contention is the police assertion that Arya’s death was linked to burnout. Dwi said that the conclusion did not align with the fact that Arya was preparing to travel abroad with his family at the time of his death.
“The police conclusion that no other party was involved raises major questions,” he said. “We see many irregularities, but we cannot draw conclusions without access to the investigation’s findings.”
The family has also sought protection from Indonesia’s Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK), underscoring their concern over the handling of the case.
Arya’s death has stirred unease within Indonesia’s diplomatic community, where colleagues remember him as a dedicated official with a promising career. The case has gained national attention not only because of his government position but also because of the unusual circumstances of his death.
The family is calling for greater transparency and renewed scrutiny of the investigation, urging police to review potential new evidence.
