Fajar/Rian Win First All England Title to Retain World No. 1 Status
World number one pair Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto won their first All England title on Sunday by outclassing compatriots Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan in the men’s doubles final in Birmingham.
It was a mixed feeling for the champions whose victory came at the expense of Ahsan who had to be wheeled off the court due to a serious injury after the match.
“We are extremely happy but at the same time, we feel sad because at the closing stage of the match Ahsan was injured,” Rian said.
“We wish a speedy recovery for Ahsan so that he can return to competitions.”
Ahsan, 35, received treatment due to a knee injury when the opponents reached the championship point and led comfortably by six points.
The younger teammates won 21-17, 21-14 in 34 minutes.
"Ahsan and Hendra looked exhausted because they had previously played rubber games in the quarterfinal and semifinal. We increased our speed and power to put them at their wits’ end,” Fajar said.
“This trophy is especially meaningful to me because of many obstacles I had in my way prior to the tournament.”
Fajar said he was hospitalized for injury after returning from the Asia Mixed Team Championship in Dubai and had only a fortnight to prepare himself for the All England.
“I didn’t expect that I would win here,” the 28-year-old said.
In the past six years, Indonesia has had four different winners in All England men's doubles.
