Body of Indonesian Migrant Worker Repatriated from Cambodia After Two-Month Ordeal
Asahan, N. Sumatra. The body of Indonesian migrant worker Azwar, a native of Asahan Regency, was returned home on Friday after nearly two months of diplomatic and administrative efforts led by the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh.
Azwar’s remains arrived at Kualanamu International Airport in Deli Serdang at around 8:30 a.m. aboard a Malaysia Airlines flight. The casket was then transported to his family home in Bunut subdistrict, Kisaran Barat.
The migrant worker was reported to have died in Cambodia after allegedly jumping from the third floor of a building. Family members said he had endured repeated abuse, including electric shocks and beatings, from his employer, identified as operating an online scam company.
When the casket was opened for the first time at the family home, grief overwhelmed mourners, with one relative fainting during the proceedings.
Danu Irvan, an official with the Foreign Ministry’s Directorate for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens, said the repatriation was coordinated by the government and the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh.
“The body was delivered directly to the family’s home. Alhamdulillah, everything went smoothly,” Danu said on Friday. “The embassy arranged the entire repatriation process, from securing funds from the employer to covering transportation costs and providing compensation for the family.”
Azwar’s younger brother, Abdul Aziz, expressed gratitude to the authorities for facilitating the return. “We are deeply thankful to the government, especially the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh, for helping us bring my brother home so he could be buried in our hometown,” he said.
Following its arrival, the body was laid to rest at a public cemetery in Sidomukti, Kisaran Barat, later the same day.
