Jakarta. The Financial Services Authority or OJK is planning to make vehicle insurance mandatory starting next year, and people are frowning on this plan as it would mean bigger expenses.

Starting in Jan. 2025, all motor vehicles, including motorcycles and cars, must carry third-party liability insurance. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo had said that the government had not held any meeting on this vehicle insurance mandate. But Indonesia is moving closer to the deadline. Beritasatu.com recently asked people around what they thought of mandatory vehicle insurance, and many refused to spend more money.

Jerry (35) admitted that he did not know the details of the insurance mandate. He said that such a mandate was unnecessary as many vehicle sellers are already offering insurance policies.

“I’m so against [this vehicle mandate]. We already get our insurance when we purchase our vehicles. So why pay [for the third-party liability insurance] again? This is only adding our expenses,” Jerry told Beritasatu.com over the weekend.

Motorcyclist Nurdin (32) said the third-party liability insurance should have been optional. “I don’t agree with this mandate. I think anyone should be free to choose whether to insure their vehicles or not. If this policy enters into force, we will have to spend more money,” Nurdin said.

Saka (26) admitted to having only heard about this insurance mandate. Saka said that the insurance would help cover the loss from accidents.  “So that’s the good part. But at the same time, I disagree with this mandatory insurance because it will lead to bigger costs,” Saka added.
