Bali Police Probe Alleged Kidnapping of Ukrainian Tourist
Gianyar, Bali. Indonesian police have launched a search operation after a 28-year-old Ukrainian national was reported missing and allegedly abducted on the resort island of Bali.
The man, identified as Igor Komarov, was reported missing on Saturday night, according to local authorities.
In response, the Gianyar Police deployed a large-scale security sweep, conducting roadside inspections of cars and motorcycles at a key border point between regencies. The operation took place at the Tulikup–Sidan intersection and involved 35 officers from criminal investigation, traffic, narcotics, public order and internal affairs units.
Officers inspected 120 cars and 50 motorcycles during the two-hour operation, which began at 9:45 p.m. local time. Police said no suspects or vehicles linked to the alleged abduction were identified.
“The operation was carried out following instructions from Bali Police leadership to maintain regional security and narrow the movement of potential perpetrators,” said Commissioner I Nyoman Sukadana, operations chief of the Gianyar Police on Monday.
The suspected kidnapping is believed to have initially occurred in the jurisdiction of South Kuta Police under Denpasar City Police on Saturday evening. Bali Police subsequently ordered intensified patrols and inspections across the broader Sarbagita metropolitan area, which includes Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar and Tabanan.
Authorities said the operation concluded at 11 p.m. without incident and that patrols would continue as part of heightened security measures.
Posts on the platform X alleged that a man named Igor Komarov — described online as the son of a Dnipro-based crime figure — had been abducted in Bali and was being held for ransom.
A video widely shared online purportedly shows a bruised man identifying himself as Komarov and claiming that his captors demanded $10 million. The authenticity of the video has not been independently verified.
Ukraine’s diplomatic mission in Indonesia said it was aware of the reports but had not received any official notification from Indonesian authorities.
“We can neither confirm nor deny the kidnapping,” Ukrainian Chargé d’Affaires Yevhenia Shynkarenko told local media, adding that the embassy had not received any formal request for assistance.
Indonesian police have not publicly confirmed a ransom demand or provided further details about the circumstances of the disappearance. Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing.
