150 Rohingya Refugees Stranded Off Aceh Coast; Three Lives Lost
Aceh. The alarming discovery of 150 Rohingya refugees stranded on a drifting boat off the coast of Labuhan Haji, Aceh Selatan, has exposed the grim realities of human trafficking. Tragically, three individuals lost their lives during the perilous journey.
The Rohingya, a predominantly Muslim ethnic group, face severe persecution in Myanmar, prompting thousands to undertake dangerous sea voyages each year in hopes of reaching Malaysia or Indonesia.
Joko Krisdiyanto, spokesperson for the Aceh Police, reported that these refugees are suspected victims of human trafficking syndicates that exploit their precarious situation.
"They departed from Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, in early October, seeking a better life. Sadly, their hopes ended in tragedy," Joko said on Wednesday.
Initial investigations suggest that traffickers acquired the fishing vessel KM Bintang Raseuki to facilitate their operations, using it to collect the Rohingya refugees at sea before transporting them to Aceh Selatan.
"Three suspects have been arrested and are facing serious charges under human trafficking laws," he confirmed.
The detained individuals, identified as F, 35, I, 32, and A, 33, were arrested in Pakpak Barat, North Sumatra, on Friday, Oct. 18, for their involvement in smuggling 216 Rohingya refugees to the waters off Aceh Selatan.
The case came to light after a body was found in the waters off South Aceh, prompting further investigations that revealed the vessel carrying hundreds of Rohingya.
"Initially, there were 216 Rohingya refugees, but 50 are believed to have successfully reached Pekanbaru, paying approximately Rp 20 million," said Ade Harianto, Director of Criminal Investigation at Aceh Police.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has urged the Indonesian government to rescue the Rohingya adrift at sea, currently anchored about 6 kilometers off the coast of Aceh province.
"UNHCR and its partners stand ready to provide crucial assistance to these vulnerable individuals," said Faisal Rahman from UNHCR on Tuesday.
Faisal added that negotiations between the UN and the Indonesian government are ongoing. Indonesia, not a signatory to the UN Refugee Convention, has maintained that it cannot be forced to accept refugees from Myanmar. Instead, the country has called on neighboring nations to share the burden of accommodating Rohingya refugees arriving in its territory.
While many in Aceh express sympathy for the plight of the Rohingya, there are also concerns among some locals about conflicts arising from the presence of these refugees.
