Jakarta. The Ragunan Zoo in South Jakarta, one of the capital’s most beloved family attractions, is offering something new for both residents and visitors: a chance to explore the zoo after sunset.

Starting this weekend, the zoo will open its gates every Saturday night from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. under a new program called “Night at the Ragunan Zoo.” The initiative allows visitors to experience a different side of the 147-hectare park and observe nocturnal animals in their natural nighttime rhythm.

“We have conducted comprehensive simulations and studies to ensure smooth night operations at Ragunan,” said Endah Rumiyati, head of the Ragunan Zoo Management Unit, on Saturday.

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung first proposed the idea for nighttime zoo hours in August. Following months of technical assessments and animal behavior studies, the program was finally brought to life to enhance the city’s tourism offerings while maintaining animal welfare standards.

Unlike the busy daytime atmosphere, the night program focuses on a curated route featuring animals that thrive in low light. Visitors can expect to encounter Sumatran tigers, reptiles, small mammals, and pelicans --each showcased along the zoo’s main pathways.

“The feeding sessions are the highlight,” said Ragunan Zoo spokesperson Wahyudi Bambang. “At 7 p.m., we have simultaneous feedings for the pangolin and Sumatran tiger. At 8 p.m., there are the otters, followed by porcupines and moon civets at 9 p.m. Visitors can also see the pygmy hippos at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m.”

To make the experience comfortable, the zoo offers electric buggies (Rp 250,000 per hour, for up to five people) and educational sessions led by zookeepers. These interactive talks help guests better understand animal behavior and conservation efforts.

Special lighting installations now guide guests through the park’s walking paths and animal enclosures. The lighting is carefully designed to illuminate without disturbing the animals’ natural patterns. Picnic areas are also open for those who want to unwind under the stars.

The zoo’s management has deployed 40 security personnel and field guides across the grounds to ensure a safe and smooth experience. The new night hours will be held once a week, with standard ticket prices applying.

“We make sure that all displayed animals remain comfortable and not stressed by visitor activities,” Endah added.

Established in 1864, Ragunan Zoo is home to over 2,000 animals representing more than 200 species. While it’s long been a favorite daytime destination for Jakarta families, the “Night at the Ragunan Zoo” program adds a unique after-dark experience.
